About Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens is an award-winning cultural center in the Myrtle Beach area. Their mission is to collect, conserve and exhibit sculpture by American artists and the plants, animals, and cultural materials of the South Carolina Lowcountry. This culminates in a unique blend of art, nature, and history.

Every day, Brookgreen offers tours, programs, and exhibits for all visitors. Guests are welcome to stroll through the gardens with a guide on their own. This is a worthwhile place to visit, as it is one of the few places in the United States to have earned accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums while also being designated a National Historic Landmark. The center is truly one-of-a-kind!

The Gardens

The gardens were originally founded by Archer Huntington and his wife, famed sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, as a means for Anna to regain her strength after being diagnosed with tuberculosis. Soon, they converted the space into a not-for-profit corporation as “A Society for Southeastern Flora and Fauna.”

Today, there is an impressive array of diversity that is open to the public to explore. The butterfly garden offers many horticultural surprises, in addition to the gorgeous butterfly collection. Ancient trees, planted in the 1700s, can be found in the Live Oak Allée. The Brenda W. Rosen Carolina Terrace Garden boasts a variety of perennials, roses, shrubs, and mature trees.

Hundreds of flora and fauna species can be appreciated by exploring the rest of the gardens. There are common plants native to the region and endangered or rare plants. You’ll also find a wide variety of seasonal blooming plants, like Egyptian Star Flowers or Chinese Ground Orchids, that make it worthwhile to visit the garden again and again at different points of the year.

The Sculptures

Impressively, Brookgreen contains the United States’ largest sculpture collection with over 2,000 works by 430 artists. The majority of these sculptures are integrated naturally into the garden and can be viewed as you tour the flora and fauna. Indoor galleries present smaller sculptures, paintings, etchings, and other artwork by renowned artists. Some of the works displayed are temporary exhibits, on loan from museums and private collections, so you may want to check the latest showings before planning your visit.

Thanks to a generous donor, the center is able to host sculptors-in-residence, who demonstrate the sculpture process to the public, give lectures on their work, and even hold workshops. Check the center calendar in advance to see what upcoming events will be hosted.

Location & Hours

The center is open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday to Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Tickets can be purchased upon arrival or in advance for special events. The standard price for adults is $20.
